7 Day Bible Reading Challenge

First, thanks for sharing the Elevate Your Marriage Newsletter with your friends and other couples. The newsletter now reaches over 100 couples - in just 3 weeks time - and we pray to reach & encourage more couples every week. 

This week, let’s talk about talk. Communication can be a challenge for many marriage’s - for many reasons. The thing about how we talk to each other is that it can be all good and “we just don’t talk like me used to” - in the same day (LOL). 

So this week, I want to share a simple challenge with you that I have seen work with couples that couldn’t agree on the color of the sky to couples that are already talking consistently and effectively. In other words, it works no matter where your communication is right now. So here it is:

Read The Bible - Together. 

Yep, That’s it. Read the Bible together as a couple for the next 7 Days. Here’s why - the deeper communication is between husband and wife the deeper the connection(s) between them is also. When our communication becomes shallow like: What’s for dinner? Did you see this on tv or the news? What’s up with the kids? or How was work…. Our relationship is also soon to become shallow. But when we can deepen communication we can deepen points of connection in our marriage. 

To be clear not every conversation has to be or will be deep, those questions above are important too. But, as often as possible lets engage each other on deeper more revealing topics too. 

And as far as I know nothing is deeper, more engaging than God’s Word, so for the next 7 days (nothing magical or superstitious about 7) Read the Bible together. Here are the rules:

1. Pick Passage. 2 options, read the Psalms or Proverbs. Example: Psalms 20-27 or Proverbs: read chapter according to the date - today is March 7, so read Proverbs 7 today and 8 tomorrow…
2. Don’t Read Together: (LOL) it would be great to sit down & read aloud to each other, for many couples that's tough, so don't let your schedules hinder the overall goal. So agree on what you will read (Step 1), read on your own time…
3. Time to Talk: Agree on when & where to meet - be specific put on phone/calendar. Husbands, make sure this meeting happens - text, call, remind, make sure the 2 of you meet. 
4. Talk Not Bible Study: Just talk. Start conversation with: What did it make you think of? Example, Psalms 23, made me think of when I was 6 years old and my mom made me memorize this…Just talk. What other observations came from what you read? This is not Bible Study, just talk…
5. Have Fun.

 That’s it. Spend the next 7 days reading God’s Word, meet talk together and watch how He deepens communication and conversation between the two of you.
