18 years, that's how long I've been studying the more than 60 husbands and wives of the Bible. It has been a blessing that has literally taken me around the world - from West Africa to Northern Italy and many churches throughout the United States.
What I love about sharing and studying the marriages in the Bible is they continue to teach me - how to be a better husband, father and man! It is so true, you just can't exhaust God's wisdom.
The top nugget I learned (learn't - lol) last year, 2023 came from the marriage of Samson's dad and mom in Judges 14:4:
His father and mother did not know that it was from the Lord, for He was seeking an opportunity against the Philistines. At that time the Philistines ruled over Israel.
Take a minute to read all of Judges 14, but here it is in summary. Samson wanted to marry a woman from the enemies of his people. So for good, logical reasons, his parents didn't want him to marry her. Again - their reasoning makes sense. BUT, logical or not, what his parents didn't get was that God was behind Samson's desire to marry, because God had a bigger plan...
The first time I read that led me to a few months of reflection about my own marriage:
- I can come to logical conclusions about my wife & marriage while also missing the spiritual point.
- I don't always even seek to know God's point, but only for me to be right (wasn't trying to rhyme)?
- Circumstances can influence my ability to hear from and align with God.
Those were just my personal reflections. There is a lot more in this passage, read it together this week and share your own points of reflection with each other.
Prayer: Lord help us to see and know what is from you - in our marriage. |
