The Power of Pouring Yourself Out…

The Power of Pouring Yourself Out…

DSC_2776xWhat parts of yourself do you “press” into your children?

That answer to that question has to encompass both the good and bad of who we are. As I watch my son get older, I see more of me come out in him. Which is both good and not so good (LOL). Our children are not only mini versions of what they see in us but also like a genetic baton they have inherited many of our personality traits. So then, what we pour into them factors into who they are. At this point I probably have not said anything that you have not heard or thought about before. But perhaps there is an aspect of this that may be helpful…

The Power of Our Commitment.

Today, I am moved by a story I first heard about on the nationally syndicated, Tom Joyner Morning Show. Every Tuesday they do a Real Fathers, Real Men segment where they honor an exemplary father in the African American community. This week the father was Alvin Roy, a father of a young man that is about to graduate magna cum laude from Texas Southern University. In addition, and most significant to the story, his son is also going to be the first person with Down Syndrome to graduate from a four year college.  How awesome is that?

As the story is told, the boy’s mother abandoned him at an early age. His father, a military veteran and law student,  then stepped in a raised his son – as a single father. There are many more details of this intriguing story but the one detail I am focussing on is how the son would sit by his father’s side and watch him paint for hours. It was then as this father poured his gift and love for art back into his son that his son overcame what many would perceive as a limiting disability. And, it causes me to wonder both, what am and what I can pour into my child to help him overcome his obstacles in life?

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6

Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: Proverbs 6:6

My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow thine ear to my understanding: Proverbs 5:1

Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? Hebrews 12:9

And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. Deuteronomy 6:6-7
