The Christmas Story (Part 1): Joseph and Mary, Trusting and Obeying God

The Christmas Story (Part 1): Joseph and Mary, Trusting and Obeying God

Matthew 2:13 Now when they had gone, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Get up! Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is going to search for the Child to destroy Him.”

If ever there was a couple that the entire world can learn from, it is Joseph and Mary. The obedience of Joseph and Mary in their marriage has implications for all people, for it was through their obedience that God completed His forty-two- generation descent from His seat in heaven to earth (cf. Matthew 1:17, Philippians 2:6–11).

When Joseph’s virgin fiancée became pregnant, of course Joseph was a little puzzled. But an angel told him to marry Mary because her conception of the child was by the Holy Spirit (cf. Matthew 1:20–21). Joseph obeyed the angel’s instructions and took Mary as his wife and kept her as a virgin until she gave birth to Jesus.

Shortly after the birth of Jesus, another angel spoke to Joseph. This time he was instructed to “Get up! Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is going to search for the Child to destroy Him” (Matthew 2:13).

Again, Joseph responded obediently, so he took Mary and Jesus to Egypt until Herod died. After Herod’s death, Joseph was told in a dream that those who searched to kill Jesus had died. God then directed Joseph to the city of Nazareth. Each time that God spoke to Joseph through an angel He was guiding Joseph, Mary and Jesus toward the fulfillment of the prophecy that the Messiah would be a Nazarene. And none of these necessary steps would have occurred if Joseph had not been determined to be obedient – to God.

Ok EYM family, let’s be honest it is not easy to trust and be obedient to God. It was not easy for us/me to obey my parents as a child. I have always wanted to do things my way on my time. Likewise, in marriage, obeying God is not always easy. So as a couple, how do you and your spouse spend time hearing from and obeying God?
